The Wildest Goodbye: Closing Day at Mammoth Mountain

Chelsea Aguirre

Every year, as Mammoth Mountain’s ski season comes to a close, something special happens. No fanfare, no big corporate event—just pure, unfiltered mountain culture. Locals and die-hard skiers gather for one final blowout, and this year, I got to experience it firsthand. Spoiler alert: it was chaos in the best possible way.

Imagine this: It’s early summer, the sun’s beating down, you’re wearing enough sunscreen to survive a solar flare, and you’re still skiing. Not just skiing—doing it in retro neon one-pieces, sunglasses from the ’80s, and maybe even a wig or two. There’s music everywhere, blasting from backpacks and portable speakers, mixing with the crunch of slushy snow under ski boots.

The highlight of the day? The annual, unofficial snowball fight at the summit. Every closing day, hundreds of people hike or ski their way to the top. No announcements, no schedules—it’s just tradition. You get up there, look around, and suddenly snowballs are flying in every direction. It’s a free-for-all where no one’s safe, everyone’s laughing, and for a few glorious minutes, it feels like you’re part of the world’s happiest snowball battle. Strangers chuck snow at each other like old friends, and somehow everyone leaves in a better mood.

After the snowball fight comes the group photo, one last snapshot to remember the season. Everyone lines up, throws arms around each other, and grins through their goggle tans and beer-soaked gloves. Then it’s one final run down the mountain—messy, slushy, and absolutely perfect.

Closing day at Mammoth isn’t about perfect powder or clean lines. It’s about celebrating the end of a long winter, saying goodbye to the mountain in the most chaotic, joyful way possible. Sun, snow, retro outfits, good people, and that electric energy that only happens when a season comes to a close.

If you ever get the chance, don’t skip it. Come for the skiing, stay for the snowball fight, and leave with a story you’ll tell forever.
